Lohn Valley was first settled in 1879 by
W.F. Lohn and family. In 1896 Lohn Central School was built at Lohn ISD's
present location as a consolidation of three small schools near the town of Lohn.
The school had one teacher: Mr. S.H. Gholson. As Lohn grew in the early
1900's, a need for a larger school emerged. Consequently, in 1915, a new two-story
brick "school house" was built. By 1934 Lohn students had once again
outgrown their school, and the building was replaced with the present-day Elementary
Building. Over the years the school has grown and developed. Recent additions
include a new library, science lab, and a state-of-the-art
distance-learning/videoconferencing room.
In 1998, Lohn was awarded two large
technology grants. The school has used this funding to connect each classroom by
network to the internet. The internet, as well as other technology, is used
extensively by the students in Lohn ISD
In 1999, Lohn was again awarded a
technology grant. This funding is being used to purchase 15 new workstations for the
computer classroom that will allow students to perform advanced web authoring and video
editing. Computers from last years grant that are currently being used in the
computer classroom will be distributed throughout the school. This will assure that
each classroom has at least three Internet-ready, pentium-level computers available to its
students.
Lohn has been very successful both in
academics and athletics. The school has garnered state championships in
tennis, track, and six-man football. Basketball has brought Lohn numerous
district championships and several trips to the regional tournament. Lohn students
have qualified for regional and state contests in various academic areas including
one-act-play, debate, science, and poetry reading. In two of the last three years
(95-96 and 97-98), Lohn has been awarded the states' highest academic honor of Exemplary
School in each of the last 5 years.
